How the Nigeria Import Duty Calculator Works
The calculator uses the official Nigeria Customs Service duty calculation formula. Here’s exactly how your estimated customs cost is computed.
1. We Calculate Your CIF Value
CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) is the taxable base for all Nigerian import duties. We add your supplier’s invoice (FOB), shipping cost, and insurance to get your CIF value. NCS uses CIF, not just the supplier’s price, to ensure duty reflects the total landed cost.
2. We Apply the Duty Rate
Based on your product category, we apply the standard 2026 Nigeria import duty rate (5% to 35% of CIF). The duty rate is determined by your HS Code, which classifies the type of goods. We use category averages for the estimate.
3. We Add VAT (7.5%)
VAT in Nigeria is 7.5% of (CIF + Import Duty). It’s calculated on the duty-inclusive value, not just CIF. We compute this automatically.
4. We Add the Levies (CISS + ETLS + NXP)
Three small levies apply to all imports: CISS (1% of CIF), ETLS (0.5% of CIF), and NXP (0.5% of CIF). These fund customs supervision, ECOWAS trade, and export promotion respectively. Combined: 2% of CIF.
Worked Example: $10,000 Clothing Shipment
Let’s say you’re importing $10,000 worth of clothing from Guangzhou (clothing = 20% duty rate), with $1,500 ocean freight and $50 insurance.
| Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| CIF Value | $10,000 + $1,500 + $50 | $11,550 |
| Import Duty (20%) | $11,550 × 0.20 | $2,310.00 |
| VAT (7.5%) | ($11,550 + $2,310) × 0.075 | $1,039.50 |
| CISS (1%) | $11,550 × 0.01 | $115.50 |
| ETLS (0.5%) | $11,550 × 0.005 | $57.75 |
| NXP (0.5%) | $11,550 × 0.005 | $57.75 |
| Total Customs Cost | Sum of all | $3,580.50 |
| Effective Rate (of FOB) | $3,580.50 / $10,000 | ~35.8% |
Note: This $3,580.50 is only the customs duty and tax. It does NOT include ocean freight, port charges, customs agent fees, or inland delivery. For a complete all-in cost, request a DDP quote from Foon Chaser.
Understanding your duty cost upfront lets you price your products correctly, plan your margins, and avoid cash flow surprises. Nigerian importers who don’t budget for duty often find themselves with seized cargo or unable to pay for release. Use this calculator as a starting point, then get an exact quote for your specific cargo.
Why Your Exact HS Code Affects the Final Duty
The calculator uses category averages for the estimate. Your actual duty depends on your exact HS Code (Harmonised System Code) — a 6–10 digit number that classifies every product type for customs purposes.
How HS Codes Work
HS Codes follow a hierarchical structure. For example, the HS Code for smartphones is 8517.13.00.00:
- Chapter 85 — Electrical machinery and equipment
- Heading 8517 — Telephone sets, smartphones, and other apparatus for transmission
- Subheading 8517.13 — Smartphones
- National subheading 8517.13.00.00 — Nigeria’s specific classification
Different HS codes within the same category can have different duty rates. For example, “smartphones” (8517.13) and “mobile phone parts” (8517.70) may have different rates.
How to Find Your HS Code
- Ask your Chinese supplier — they often know the HS Code used for their exports
- Check the Proforma Invoice — many suppliers include HS Codes on their invoices
- Use the WCO HS Code Lookup — World Customs Organisation tool
- Ask Foon Chaser — we help importers classify their HS codes for accurate duty assessment
What Happens If You Use the Wrong HS Code
Using the wrong HS Code can cause several problems:
❌ Under-classification (lower duty)
If you use a HS Code with a lower duty rate to save money, NCS will reassess your cargo at the correct rate, plus penalties. This is considered evasion and can result in fines or seizure.
❌ Over-classification (higher duty)
If you use a HS Code with a higher duty rate, you overpay on every shipment. Foon Chaser helps you find the correct code to pay only what you owe.
The calculator gives you a reliable estimate, but your exact HS Code can shift the final number by 5–15% in either direction. Foon Chaser’s HS Code classification service ensures you pay the right amount — no more, no less. Request a classification review as part of your shipping quote.

Nigeria Import Duty Calculator — Complete FAQ
How is Nigeria import duty calculated?
Nigeria import duty is calculated as a percentage of CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) value based on your HS Code. The formula is: Duty = CIF × Duty Rate. Then VAT = (CIF + Duty) × 7.5%. CISS = CIF × 1%, ETLS = CIF × 0.5%, NXP = CIF × 0.5%. Total customs cost = Duty + VAT + CISS + ETLS + NXP. Duty rates range from 5% to 35% depending on product category.
What is CIF value in customs duty calculation?
CIF stands for Cost + Insurance + Freight. It is the total value used by Nigeria Customs to calculate import duty. Cost = the FOB price of your goods (supplier’s invoice). Insurance = marine or air cargo insurance cost. Freight = the shipping cost from China to Nigeria. Using CIF as the base ensures duty is calculated on the total landed cost, not just the supplier’s price.
How accurate is this Nigeria import duty calculator?
This calculator provides a reliable estimate based on standard 2026 Nigeria Customs duty rates. However, the actual duty depends on: (1) your exact HS Code classification, (2) current NCS rulings at time of assessment, (3) applicable duty concessions or exemptions, and (4) the exact value declared on your commercial invoice. For an exact quote specific to your cargo, request a custom calculation from Foon Chaser.
What HS Code should I use?
HS Codes (Harmonised System Codes) are 6–10 digit numbers that classify every product type. The calculator uses product categories as a proxy. For an exact HS Code classification, Foon Chaser helps importers identify the correct code for their specific goods. Using the wrong HS Code can result in Red Channel assignment, wrong duty assessment, and customs penalties.
Does the calculator include all charges?
The calculator estimates: Import Duty, VAT (7.5%), CISS (1%), ETLS (0.5%), and NXP (0.5%). It does NOT include: terminal handling charges (THC), port storage, demurrage, examination fees, PAAR filing fees, customs agent fees, or inland delivery. For a complete landed cost including all charges, use Foon Chaser’s DDP service or request an all-in quote.
What is the VAT rate in Nigeria for imports?
Nigeria’s VAT rate for imports is 7.5%, calculated on (CIF + Import Duty). For example, a $10,000 CIF shipment with 20% duty pays $1,039.50 in VAT (7.5% of $13,860). VAT is collected by Nigeria Customs Service alongside import duty and is not refundable for commercial imports.
What are CISS, ETLS, and NXP levies?
These are three small Nigerian Customs levies charged on all imports: CISS (Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme) = 1% of CIF. ETLS (ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme) = 0.5% of CIF. NXP (Nigeria Export Promotion) = 0.5% of CIF. Combined, they add 2% to your total customs cost. All three are calculated on the CIF value, not CIF + duty.
Can I get a duty exemption for my goods?
Some goods qualify for duty exemptions or concessions in Nigeria, including: agricultural machinery, pharmaceutical products, certain raw materials, and goods imported under specific government programmes. To qualify, you typically need to apply through the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) or relevant ministry. Foon Chaser can advise on whether your cargo might qualify for any exemption.
What happens if I underpay duty?
If Nigeria Customs determines you underpaid duty (due to wrong HS Code, undervalued invoice, or other reasons), your cargo is held. You must pay the correct duty plus a penalty (typically 10–50% of the underpayment). In severe cases of evasion, cargo can be seized and sold at auction. Accurate HS Code classification is essential.
How do I pay Nigeria import duty?
Nigeria import duty is paid electronically via the Trade Modernisation Platform. Your freight agent (like Foon Chaser) handles this on your behalf. Payment methods include bank transfer, debit card, and approved payment platforms. Duty must be paid before cargo release.
Why is the calculator estimate different from my final duty?
The calculator uses standard 2026 duty rates and category averages. Your actual duty may differ due to: (1) different HS Code than the category default, (2) current NCS policy changes, (3) applicable exemptions you qualify for, (4) different value assessment if NCS uses reference prices, (5) additional levies not modelled. The calculator gives a strong estimate; the actual duty is set by NCS at the time of assessment.
Is the calculator free to use?
Yes, this calculator is completely free to use, with no sign-up required. Foon Chaser provides it as a public service to help Nigerian importers plan their costs. For an exact quote specific to your cargo, we offer free consultations via WhatsApp or phone.
